Aaron Montgomery Ward
When Aaron Montgomery Ward had an 8 story skyscraper built at Michigan and Madison, he was appalled that, from the top of it, one could see the mess of garbage and shacks on the lakefront. It was then that he determined he would fight to keep the lakefront free and clear. Ward waged a 20 year, $50,000 battle for an open lakefront, and finally had his case upheld by the Illinois Supreme Court in 1909.1
