Civic Federation

The creation of reformer William Stead, the Civic Federation was incorporated on January 31, 1894. Their first president was the banker Lyman J. Gage.

Among its early success was setting up a Central Relief Association to give shelter to the homeless and giving jobs at public works to the unemployed. Later on its activities would include paying 40 Pinkerton men to raid gambling dens.1
