Memorial Day Massacre

On May 26, 1937, workers at the Republic Steel Corporation went on strike, and on Memorial Day, 2,000 workers marched on the plant to prevent scabs from crossing the picket lines. They were met by 150 policemen, who ordered them to disperse.

Chaos would ensure, with the police killing 10 strikers and injuring 60 others, while seeing 26 of their own officers hospitalized.1
