Orville Enoch Hodge

Orville Enoch Hodge may just hold the title for most money stolen by a single local public official. While he was state auditor for Illinois, Hodge took somewhere between $2,599,603 - $2,640,878.1

While most politicians would hide their kickbacks and graft, Hodge was essentially writing checks to himself. Thus it was not too difficult for the Chicago Daily News to break the story in 1956.

$1,571,364 was ultimately recovered, and Hodge spent six years, 5 months and 11 days in prison.2
