World's Columbian Exposition

The World's Columbian Exposition, held in Chicago, was supposed to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America, but was delayed a year, opening in 1893.

By all accounts it was a huge success for the city, attracting 25,836,073 visitors.1
